MARCELLI REVVED UP

(STAFF) -- Race-car driver and Barrie native Kyle Marcelli is gearing up for the American Le Mans Series race at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Ct., this weekend.

Marcelli, who will compete in the LMPC class, is the series' youngest driver.

The race marks the start of the second half in the 2010 ALMS championship.

After narrowly missing out on a class victory a few weeks ago in Monterey, Calif., at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Marcelli will be piloting the No. 89 LMPC entry alongside Brian Wong. The duo worked together during the last round in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"I'm very excited for this weekend's events," Marcelli said. "I know we have the team and equipment to win the race, and at the end of the day, that's our goal.

"For this race, it will be significant to keep our nose clean and out of trouble," he added. "Good traffic management and overall, a race-quick pace will be key."

The race will air on the SPEED channel Saturday at 2 p.m.

Loo, 37, announced Thursday she was retiring after 11 years with the Canadian snowboard team. She was a two-time Olympian and seven-time national champion in parallel giant slalom.

"Alexa leaves a strong legacy to women's snowboarding," Robert Joncas, director of high performance at Canada Snowboard, said. "We hope that she will, in some way, continue to share her passion for snowboarding in the community."

Loo, of Richmond, B.C., finished 12th at the Vancouver Olympics, the top Canadian woman.

JR. EVENT IN GOOD SHAPE

(QMI) -- With less than two weeks to go before the 2010 Royale Cup Jr. Girls Golf Championship tees off at Sawmill Creek, organizers are pleased with the support they have received from the community.

"A number of businesses have stepped up to support the tournament with sponsorships," said the event's chairperson Margo Harrison, at a media conference at Sawmill Creek.

"And our membership has really been great," she added. "Everyone seems to want to help out and do what they can do to make this a success."

More than 120 girls have registered for the event, which will be staged Aug. 3-6.

Matt McKay, of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, is the tournament director. He says he is confident the tournament will reach a full field of 156 by the July 30 registration deadline.

The tournament, which has been held every year since 1955, is open to girls 19-and-under, as of Aug. 6.
